Real Madrid is entering the new La Liga season with a defensive issue, as key injuries have limited Jose Mourinho to just three available senior centre-backs for the opening match against Espanyol.
As reported by AS, Eder Militao is still recovering from long-term injuries sustained last season, while Raul Asencio is set to be sidelined for approximately six weeks due to a thigh injury sustained during pre-season.
With this predicament, Real Madrid may have to rely on Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, and summer signing Ibrahima Konate as their only first-team central defensive options for the season opener.
Injuries to Militao and Asencio Leave Mourinho Short-Handed
Real Madrid’s defensive options have been severely reduced even before the competitive season has fully started.
On paper, Mourinho has five recognized centre-backs, but injuries mean only three will be available for the match against Espanyol.

Militao is still recovering and not yet ready for match action, while Asencio’s thigh injury will keep him out for several weeks.
This leaves Mourinho with limited options for rotation as the season begins.
The primary concern will be Konate’s fitness. The new signing still has time to improve his condition, with a pre-season friendly against Schalke scheduled before the season kicks off.
Meanwhile, Huijsen, who missed the first official match due to a minor muscle issue, is expected to play a significant role again, having been one of the most utilized centre-backs last season.

The German defender dealt with knee issues last season but has made a recent return, playing 45 minutes against Ferencváros before starting against Deportivo.

With currently only three fit senior centre-backs, one of these young players may be needed to step up as the fourth central defender in the squad.
