Noel Mooney, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, says FIFA president Gianni Infantino should resign.

Infantino has come under fire for proposing to sell stakes in the World Cup and other tournaments to private investors.

Mooney, who previously worked with Infantino at UEFA, says the damage done to the sport warrants his departure, even though the plan has since been dropped.

He acknowledged Infantino’s successful career, citing positive work at UEFA and progress at FIFA, including Arsène Wenger’s technical development programme.

However, he said the attempt to “sell off the crown jewels” means Infantino should now step aside.

Earlier this month, Wales became the first home nation to withdraw support for Infantino’s bid to remain in charge of FIFA.

Pressure has intensified over a proposal to create a company to manage commercial and ticketing rights for all FIFA competitions, including the World Cups, with 21% to be sold to a private investment firm.

FIFA has also faced criticism for firing senior executive Kevin Lamour after he opposed the plan.

In a letter to Infantino, FIFA Council member Sándor Csányi withdrew his backing, calling Lamour’s dismissal the final straw.

Csányi said dismissing Lamour for challenging an initiative that Infantino later admitted was misguided highlighted serious failures in judgment, ethics and leadership.

FIFA Council member Dejan Savićević, president of Montenegro’s FA, also withdrew support, saying the proposal exposed worrying weaknesses.

Writing to FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström, Savićević said recent events showed a troubling lack of communication and transparency with member associations, the Council, and internal structures meant to uphold FIFA’s foundations.
