Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi has been fined after striking Philadelphia Union’s Quinn Sullivan during Wednesday’s 2-2 MLS draw.
Messi, 39, hit Sullivan on the back of the head late in the match, claiming the Union player had elbowed him after he released the ball.
Sullivan reacted angrily, but the referee quickly stepped in.
MLS confirmed the fine but did not disclose the amount.
Messi also scored Miami’s second at Subaru Park, his first goal since his father’s passing.
He wasn’t the only one to tangle with Sullivan—Miami’s Ian Fray was also fined by MLS.
Fray grabbed Sullivan by the neck after the two got tangled when Sullivan lost his footing in the box.
The heated game ended with two red cards, as Miami’s Yannick Bright and Sullivan’s brother Cavan were both sent off in stoppage time.
However, after review, Cavan’s one-match suspension was rescinded.
