Inter Miami interim manager Guillermo Hoyos refuted claims that Lionel Messi was responsible for the selection of new head coach Cristian ‘Kily’ González, clarifying that the decision was made by the club itself.
On Thursday evening, Inter Miami announced that González will officially become the team’s manager pending the completion of relevant work permits. In the meantime, Hoyos will continue his role as interim manager.
“No, no, [Messi didn’t suggest hiring González.] It’s the club’s decision,” Hoyos stated on Friday morning.
“I believe Messi holds considerable influence typical of players with his stature. It’s likely the same in other places; for instance, at Boca Juniors, you might consult a key figure like [Leandro] Paredes. He carries weight in discussions about a coach’s future or the appointment of a new one.”
González and Messi played together as teammates for the Argentina national team during two World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay in 2005.
González takes the helm at Inter Miami as the team is enduring a five-game winless stretch, with four losses and one draw across all competitions, including the Leagues Cup and MLS regular season.
The club currently holds second place in the Eastern Conference, accumulating 39 points from 21 matches.
Hoyos emphasized that the transition to González has been open and straightforward, asserting there is no controversy regarding his appointment.
“We’ve maintained open lines of communication from the beginning. This was expected, considering the circumstances that led us to take on this role, which has since evolved,” Hoyos remarked on Friday.
“Now, they’ve found someone who I believe is an ideal fit, highly capable, and ready to elevate the club to its rightful status. This is evident. The talented players will continue to shine just as brightly as they did under our management, and we’ll really appreciate the beauty of the game.”
Hoyos also mentioned he will assist González during this transition to make his adaptation to the club and MLS smoother.
“We are open to all situations. When Kily arrives, I will definitely meet with him to discuss matters. We are fully dedicated to the club,” Hoyos said.
“I want to express gratitude to the staff who have provided outstanding support. We’ve shared many joyful moments, so this should not be viewed as drama. Instead, it’s an opportunity for progress, evolution, and growth, and we must support that endeavor wholeheartedly.”
Hoyos will not be available to coach Inter Miami in Saturday’s match against CF Montreal at Nu Stadium due to a one-match suspension for repeatedly violating the league’s late kickoff policy.
