Liverpool has officially announced the acquisition of forward Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
According to sources, Andoni Iraola’s team will pay an upfront fee of £106 million ($144 million) for the French international, with a possibility of an additional £17 million ($23 million) in performance-related bonuses.
Barcola has signed a five-year contract at Anfield, making him the second-most-expensive signing in the club’s history, following the £125 million transfer of striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United last summer.
Barcola has been a long-term target for Liverpool, and sources have informed ESPN that the player was not interested in exploring other options this summer, as he was determined to leave PSG. The 23-year-old forward has played a crucial role in PSG’s recent success, including consecutive Ligue 1 and Champions League titles.
However, due to fierce competition for playing time, Barcola sought a new challenge; he becomes Liverpool’s third permanent signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Víctor Muñoz and Jérémy Jacquet. In addition, defender Ronald Araújo has joined the club on a season-long loan from Barcelona.
ESPN’s sources indicate that Liverpool is unlikely to make further first-team signings this summer unless there are unexpected departures before the transfer window closes on Tuesday. Manchester City has shown interest in forward Cody Gakpo, who primarily occupies Barcola’s favored left-sided position, but the Reds would need to secure an adequate replacement before allowing his exit.
Last season, Barcola made 49 appearances for PSG, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists for manager Luis Enrique’s squad. He also appeared in eight matches for France during the recent World Cup, netting three goals.
Barcola will don the No. 29 jersey and expressed his excitement on the club’s official website: “It is a great honor to be able to play for Liverpool. I am thrilled.”
