Manchester United defender Harry Maguire believes Marcus Rashford will play a major role for the club this season.
Rashford, 28, made his first Premier League start for United in 21 months during the 5-2 win over Ipswich at Old Trafford and was one of the team’s most dangerous attacking outlets.
His United future had looked uncertain after a fallout with former manager Ruben Amorim led to loan spells at Aston Villa and then Barcelona, who declined the chance to sign him permanently for £26m. With the transfer window closing on Tuesday night, Rashford now appears set to remain at his boyhood club.
Maguire described Rashford as a top talent and a constant threat. He said that if Rashford is committed to being at United, working hard, improving, and helping the team, the squad fully welcomes him. Maguire added that Rashford still has another level to reach and, if kept fit, happy, and motivated, will be a major asset.
Rashford has faced sustained criticism, dating back to Erik ten Hag’s tenure, with questions raised about his work rate, commitment, and even his enjoyment of the game. His time under Unai Emery and Hansi Flick away from Old Trafford appeared to help, and his strong relationship with head coach Michael Carrick is seen as a positive.
Maguire urged perspective, noting Rashford’s outstanding service to the club while acknowledging that long-serving players inevitably experience difficult seasons. He said United as a whole have fallen short of competing at the top end, which leads to individuals being singled out—something Maguire has experienced himself after losing his starting spot and the captaincy under Ten Hag. He added that Rashford has returned looking sharp, and the squad is excited to have him back.
Carrick has likened Rashford’s presence to a new signing. The manager also revitalized midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after Amorim had overlooked him, and must now lift Mainoo again following England boss Thomas Tuchel’s decision not to use him at the World Cup.
Mainoo made his first start of the season against Ipswich and grew into the game after United fell behind. Maguire praised him as excellent, especially given his limited pre-season minutes. He said Mainoo’s off-the-ball work has improved significantly under Carrick, highlighting his success in second balls and duels. While acknowledging the youngster will hit rough patches, Maguire called him grounded, composed, and confident—someone destined to be a key player for many years.
