OSNABRÜCK, Germany — Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany announced on Wednesday that Jamal Musiala could be making a return to play soon. However, he emphasized that he would not rush the German star back onto the field until he is fully prepared.
Musiala was absent from Bayern’s 4-1 victory in the German Cup against second-division Osnabrück and has not featured for Kompany after experiencing two collapses during preseason matches due to a neurological issue.
In Wednesday’s match, Harry Kane scored twice, helping the defending champions Bayern advance to the second round of the German Cup. Kompany mentioned that Musiala “might” be a possibility for the upcoming Bundesliga match against newly promoted Schalke on Saturday.
“But I don’t want to put any extra pressure on him,” Kompany said after the win against Osnabrück.
Musiala revealed that he is dealing with treatable absence seizures after collapsing on the field for the second time in four days during a friendly on August 18, just three days after a similar incident against RB Leipzig.
Kompany maintained a strong lineup against Osnabrück, starting star forwards Kane, Luis Díaz, and Michael Olise, while new signing Ismael Saibari made his first appearance since joining from PSV Eindhoven.
“We kept finding spaces and created more chances as the game went on. We struggled against their compact defense in the first half; in the second, they attempted to press us, which also offered some opportunities,” Kompany said. “Winning 4-1 away in the cup against a strong defensive team is quite an achievement.”
Osnabrück took an early lead with a stunning 30-meter strike from Robin Meissner, for which both Kane and Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig congratulated the scorer.
“It was a solid performance. Matches like these are never straightforward,” Kane commented post-match. “Playing away against a strong team with such fantastic fan support creates a tough atmosphere. We needed to remain disciplined and focused, especially after they scored such a brilliant goal.”
Kane quickly equalized for Bayern, and Tom Bischof put them ahead 2-1 in the 24th minute. Bayern sealed the win in the 73rd minute with Olise’s goal, followed by Kane converting a penalty to complete the score.
Bayern started their season with a 2-1 triumph over Dortmund in the Super Cup and a 5-1 victory against Stuttgart in their Bundesliga opener.
