Gerard Martin has capitalized on Barcelona’s injury situations, with Alejandro Balde’s absence granting him the chance to frequently start for the team this season.
The young left-back has already clocked nearly 520 minutes of competitive play, solidifying his role as a reliable backup for Balde.
During a recent media interaction (h/t SPORT), Martin reflected on his journey from humble beginnings at his youth club, Cornella, amidst his current success.
Gerard Martin Reflects on His Time at Cornella
“I made my debut with the first team while still a youth player, and eventually, I made the leap and became a permanent fixture. It was a joyful experience to be part of Cornellà’s first team at that time,” Martin recounted about his early days at Cornella.
“After that, I transitioned to Barça B, and ultimately reached the first team. Words don’t quite capture the feeling,” he added.
Gerard Martin joined Cornella’s youth setup at a young age, moving up to the senior team in 2021.
He played in 59 matches for Cornella before transitioning to the Barcelona academy in 2023.
“It’s an honor to reflect on my journey here and see the shirt hanging in the club, it’s incredibly fulfilling.”

“I’m very happy because this is something every child dreams about. Initially, it’s hard to believe, but as competitions progress, everything starts to come together,” he commented on his early experiences.
Martin highlighted Cornella’s legacy of producing exceptional football talent, noting that it has been the nurturing ground for several prominent Spanish players, including left-back Jordi Alba and goalkeeper David Raya.
“Cornellà has always been known for developing outstanding players. They excel in their youth development programs, consistently competing at the highest levels with clubs like Barça, Espanyol, and Girona,” he remarked.
He also expressed a deep emotional connection to Cornella, affirming that the club will always hold a special place in his heart.
“I spent five wonderful years there, which gave me the opportunity to step into professional football. I have only fond memories of my time at Cornellà; it feels like home, and I will always be grateful to the club,” he stated.
Lastly, Gerard Martin discussed his current role in Barcelona’s squad, having made several appearances this season, particularly with Hansi Flick considering continuing to involve him.
“It is an immense honor to play for the team you’ve always aspired to join,” he concluded.
