In a recent interview, Real Madrid defender Eder Militao made a startling admission that he had contemplated retirement following his second ACL tear last season.
“After my second injury (right knee), so many thoughts went through my mind. I considered retiring from football because it was incredibly tough. However, thanks to my wife, my daughter, and my teammates, I’m here today and performing well,” he shared.
It was undoubtedly a devastating moment for Militao, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury just weeks after recovering from a similar injury in his other knee.
Given the immense physical and mental challenges associated with recovering from an ACL injury, it’s understandable that he would grapple with such thoughts.
Ancelotti’s Supportive Conversation
Today, Brazil’s national team manager Carlo Ancelotti addressed Militao’s comments, considering his time as Real Madrid’s head coach.
Ancelotti revealed that he had spoken to the defender, providing support and encouraging him to let go of those retirement thoughts.

“I spoke with him because I’ve experienced knee injuries during my playing career, and it’s something that can happen to anyone in football,” the former Real Madrid manager explained.
He commended Militao for emerging from his injuries stronger and becoming a vital part of the Real Madrid defense.
“He has recovered remarkably and is showcasing his best performance at Real Madrid. He plays a crucial role, and we’re quite reassured about it given the competition for the central position,” he added.
When asked about the potential base of Real Madrid players in his current squad for the international break, Ancelotti responded:
“I believe the team has a strong foundation, not just with these players. However, I know these players very well,” he stated.
“I’m very pleased with the team dynamic, and it’s extremely positive, reflecting the attitude and professionalism of the players,” Ancelotti concluded.
