Liverpool Monitoring…

According to a recent report from the Belgian source Voetbal Nieuws, Liverpool is monitoring Zeno Debast as a potential backup option if they are unable to secure Marc Guehi either in January or on a free transfer next summer. However, they’re not alone in their pursuit; Manchester United, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, and Napoli are also keenly following the Sporting CP centre-back.

The 21-year-old Belgian international developed through the Anderlecht academy in his home country before transferring to Portugal. In the summer of 2024, Sporting acquired him for €15.5 million, plus an additional €5.5 million in potential add-ons, while Ruben Amorim was still at the helm. Demonstrating exceptional aerial ability and skill in ball distribution, Debast made 48 appearances across various competitions last season, playing a crucial role in securing the Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal titles.

Debast has had a strong start to the 2025-26 season for both his club and country, and his profile may rise further with impressive performances in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. He is under contract in Lisbon until June 2029, so Sporting would likely demand a substantial transfer fee, especially considering there is a 15% sell-on clause in favor of Anderlecht.

Why Liverpool Should Pursue Winter Reinforcements

Meanwhile, Liverpool is facing a challenging situation after three consecutive defeats prior to the international break. Although they remain in second place in the Premier League standings, their performance has been lackluster, having struggled to secure results in the early weeks. The new fullback pairing of Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez has had difficulties defensively, and Ibrahima Konate’s poor form, combined with ongoing contract issues, has further undermined the team’s defensive structure.

Aside from Konate and captain Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez is currently the only senior centre-back available. Giovanni Leoni made an impressive debut in the League Cup against Southampton but is now sidelined for the entire season due to an ACL injury sustained in the second half.

Gomez, who had an error-prone match against Southampton, has faced numerous injury setbacks throughout his decade-long career. Unless Liverpool strengthens their backline following the reopening of the transfer window, they may need to rely on Wataru Endo or Andrew Robertson as makeshift central defenders.

The Merseysiders were initially looking to sign Guehi at a bargain price, especially since his contract at Selhurst Park expires next summer. However, with several notable clubs interested in the England international, it is crucial for Arne Slot to prioritize a winter transfer for either Guehi or the emerging Belgian talent, rather than waiting until the season concludes.
