Julian Nagelsmann, head coach of the German national team, has directly addressed recent criticisms made by Northern Ireland’s Michael O’Neill. Nagelsmann and his team flew to Belfast on Sunday in preparation for an important World Cup qualifying match against O’Neill’s Nord Iron. In his remarks, Nagelsmann aimed to clarify his stance.
During the previous international break, Nagelsmann faced backlash for making what were perceived as arrogant remarks regarding Northern Irish football. Following his team’s 4-0 victory over Luxembourg in their first qualifying match of October, he sought to adopt a more respectful tone toward his upcoming opponent.
“They’re a feisty team,” Nagelsmann commented about the next challenge his squad will face during a post-match press conference on Friday. “In Belfast, with the passionate fans, it will be a completely different experience compared to today.”
“There’s been some talk suggesting that I disrespected Northern Irish football, but that’s not the case,” Nagelsmann clarified as he prepared to take off for the Isle. “I specifically mentioned that their long balls are particularly challenging to defend against.”
