Throughout the years, Real Madrid and Barcelona have frequently vied for some of the globe’s most talented young players. Soon, they may be set to battle once more for a rising star who has captured attention at the U20 World Cup.
Reports dating back to last year indicate that Barcelona expressed interest in Gilberto Mora. At just 15, he was given a trial opportunity at La Masia but chose to stay in Mexico, where he has been a consistent starter with Tijuana.
Recently, it has come to light that Real Madrid is also monitoring Mora. Both clubs are closely following his impressive journey at the ongoing U20 World Cup, where he has excelled as a 16-year-old, netting three goals and providing two assists in five matches.

At the U20 level, Mora has taken on a forward role for Mexico, but he frequently plays as a left midfielder at the club level, showcasing his versatility by also being capable of playing in central midfield. This adaptability will be of significant interest to both Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are now aware of the fee required to secure his transfer. According to reports from Mexico (via Marca), Tijuana is demanding $20 million (€17.2 million) for 50% of his rights.
Mora has his sights set on Real Madrid
Due to regulations, Mora won’t be able to join a European club until January 2027, as he won’t turn 18 until next October. When that move eventually happens, it seems likely that Real Madrid will be his preferred choice, as noted by Ignacio Ruvalcaba, head of Tijuana’s youth academy.
“Gil Mora has a dream of playing for Real Madrid, but he also remains grounded. He enjoys watching football and loves following Real Madrid; he can undoubtedly envision himself there. His family is very supportive and focused—his father has guided him well, and we hope to see him succeed. He imagines playing in Europe and has the talent to make that a reality,” Ruvalcaba stated.
