Strasbourg President…

The transfer of Emanuel Emegha (22) from RC Strasbourg to Chelsea has sparked significant controversy in Alsace. The Dutch forward, who is currently serving as captain for Strasbourg, is set to join Chelsea, which is owned by the same parent company, BlueCo, at the conclusion of the season. This deal was openly discussed in early September, shortly after the transfer window closed.

In an attempt to ease the concerns of fans following the announcement, Emegha expressed his ongoing dedication to Le Racing. However, his reassurances failed to resonate with supporters. A banner unfurled after his transfer announcement read, “Emegha, pawn of BlueCo. Return your captain’s armband once you change jerseys.”

This transfer has reopened past grievances related to BlueCo’s acquisition of Chelsea and the discontent among fans regarding multi-club ownership.

In response to the situation, Strasbourg president Marc Keller defended Emegha’s move to Stamford Bridge, stating, “It was a significant concern,” he acknowledged.

Keller elaborated, “The only way to retain him was to assure him: ‘You can go in one year.’ He was willing to do that and to serve as a captain and a leading figure for us in Europe.” Emegha will continue to play for Le Racing, who are in the running for UEFA Champions League qualification next season and are also competing in the Europa Conference League this year. Nevertheless, the management of his transfer has remained a highly contentious topic at the Meinau.
