Kevin Muscat Becomes…

Rangers are intensifying their search for a new head coach, with Kevin Muscat emerging as the frontrunner to take over from Russell Martin, who was dismissed earlier this month after a brief 123-day tenure, according to reports from Sky Sports.

Currently managing Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League, Muscat has made a positive impression on the Rangers board during early negotiations. The 52-year-old, who was part of the Rangers squad during their treble-winning 2002/03 season, boasts a robust managerial background, having achieved success in Australia, Japan, and now China. His Shanghai Port team is at the top of the league with four matches remaining, and while his focus is on securing the title, discussions for a potential move to Rangers are reportedly ongoing.

Danny Röhl Considered as Well

Another strong candidate is former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl, who has engaged in positive talks with Rangers officials. At just 36, Röhl gained respect for guiding Wednesday to mid-table stability in the Championship, transitioning from a struggling team. His previous roles at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and the Germany national team align with the club’s interest in hiring a tactically savvy and progressive coach.

Despite renewed speculation from bookmakers, Steven Gerrard, who turned down an approach last week, remains out of consideration for the position.

Currently sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers are being managed on an interim basis by Steven Smith and the B team staff while the search for a permanent coach continues. There’s a possibility of appointing a temporary manager, potentially former winger Neil McCann, if Muscat’s move is delayed.

With a match against Dundee United approaching, the Ibrox board faces increasing pressure to restore stability and direction to a club still feeling the effects of another brief managerial stint.
