Ange Postecoglou has been dismissed from his position as manager of Nottingham Forest after just 39 days and five Premier League fixtures, following a disappointing 3-0 defeat at home against Chelsea.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis lost confidence in Postecoglou just an hour into the match at the City Ground and announced his departure a mere 19 minutes after the final whistle.
This marked a troubling tenure for Postecoglou, who became the 10th permanent manager to be fired within 100 days in the Premier League era, after taking charge on September 9.
ESPN looks back at the managers who failed to leave a mark early in their tenures.
Nathan Jones, Southampton – 84 days
After leaving Luton to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl in November 2022, Welsh manager Nathan Jones struggled, mirroring his previous unsuccessful stint at Stoke City in 2019. During his tenure at Southampton, the team suffered nine defeats in 14 matches, prompting the search for yet another manager.
Quique Sánchez Flores, Watford – 85 days
Watford’s history of frequent managerial changes under the Pozzo family is well-documented. Sánchez Flores took charge twice, with his second spell lasting only 12 games, where he managed just two wins.
Bob Bradley, Swansea City – 85 days
Bradley, the first American to manage in the Premier League, endured a brief tenure from October to December 2016. He gathered only eight points across 11 games, leaving Swansea in a perilous 19th place in the standings.
Frank De Boer, Crystal Palace – 77 days
Taking charge in the summer of 2017, Frank De Boer only lasted four matches in the 2017-18 season, marking the shortest time ever for a permanent manager. He was dismissed without earning a single point or goal.
Rene Meulensteen, Fulham – 75 days
After a lengthy coaching spell at Manchester United, Meulensteen took over at Fulham in December 2013 but couldn’t turn the club’s fortunes around. His tenure ended as Fulham fell to the bottom of the table following nine defeats in 13 games.
Javi Gracia, Leeds United – 69 days
Gracia’s stint at Leeds United lasted only 69 days before he was replaced by Allardyce. Assuming the role after Jesse Marsch’s dismissal, Gracia led the team through 12 matches but managed only three wins against seven losses and two draws.
Les Reed, Charlton Athletic – 40 days
Les Reed took charge at Charlton in 2006, but his run was short-lived as he garnered only four points from seven matches and faced a League Cup exit, resulting in his dismissal on Christmas Eve.
Sam Allardyce, Leeds United – 30 days
Allardyce took over Leeds United on May 3, 2023, in a desperate bid to prevent relegation. Despite starting above the relegation zone on goal difference, he was unable to secure safety, gathering just one point in the final four matches. His contract expired on June 2, marking his tenure as the shortest for a permanent manager in Premier League history.
