Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Matchday 8, 18/10/25

OGC Nice handed Olympique Lyonnais their second consecutive defeat, edging the match 3-2. Lyon, who previously had a solid record of not conceding when down to ten men, have now allowed five goals over their last two Ligue 1 fixtures.

The Match

The match began sluggishly for Les Gones, who were quickly punished for their lack of urgency. Nice capitalized, with Sofiane Diop finding Melvin Bard at the far post, who converted from a tight angle while Dominik Greif could have done better in goal.

Despite Nice’s early finish, Lyon dominated possession and territory for long stretches, frequently sending in crosses without a clear target-man, resulting in Martín Satriano remaining largely ineffective.

Lyon’s equalizer came from one of their 35 first-half crosses. An Adam Karabec corner was flicked on by Ruben Kluivert and finished by Pavel Sulc at the far post. Just moments later, Nice seemed set to reclaim the lead when Mohamed-Ali Cho was fouled in the box by Corentin Tolisso, but VAR ruled an offside in the buildup.

Nice soon regained the lead right before halftime. A slick midfield exchange led to a swift counter, allowing Jonathan Clauss to cross for Jérémie Boga. Boga’s header across the goal was expertly turned in by Diop from a sharp angle.

The match turned in a crucial two-minute span. Lyon was awarded a penalty for a handball by Charles Vanhoutte, but Ainsley Maitland-Niles failed to convert, sending his shot straight at Yehvann Diouf. Moments later, Nice struck again, as Clauss provided another assist for Hicham Boudaoui to score with a first-time finish.

Le Gym demonstrated resilience, displaying improved organization and discipline, pushing back against Lyon’s attempts, particularly with a lack of an imposing target-man. They settled into a low-block, maintaining control and minimizing space.

However, late drama ensued. Nice dropped too deep in the closing minutes, allowing Lyon to launch balls into the box. With substitutes like Moussa Niakhaté adding height, a deflected cross fell to Sulc, who inadvertently nodded in his second goal of the match. This set up an intense concluding two minutes, but Nice held firm to maintain their lead.
