Alan Shearer Highlights Viktor Gyokeres’ Impact on Arsenal Despite Limited Goals
Evaluating Viktor Gyokeres’ performance at Arsenal is multifaceted at this time.
From a statistical standpoint, his start has been less than ideal, with three goals and one assist in 11 matches. However, Arsenal boasts an impressive record of nine wins, one draw, and only one loss in those games, with Gyokeres starting ten of them.
It’s hard to reconcile the idea that a striker can be an integral part of a team that has won nine out of eleven games while seemingly underperforming in terms of goals.
In a discussion on Match of the Day, Alan Shearer elaborated on Gyokeres’ contributions beyond scoring goals.
“There’s no doubt he needs to enhance his goal tally, as he has only managed three,” Shearer remarked. “However, one of his key strengths is his ability to run in behind defenses, which has benefited Arsenal greatly.
“When he does this, it creates space for other players. Last season, players like Havertz or Merino often dropped too deep, making it easier for defenders. But Gyokeres’ runs force defenders to drop back, opening up the pitch for his teammates. In that regard, he’s made Arsenal better.
“I believe he will score more goals, although his tally may not match last season’s numbers, considering the chances Arsenal generates. His goal-scoring numbers should improve.”
There is certainly room for improvement in Gyokeres’ performance. Although Arsenal is achieving victories, many have been by narrow margins. A few more goals from him could have solidified recent matches, allowing for earlier results and potential rest for players ahead of busy fixtures.
The only matches where Arsenal enjoyed significant comfort this season were the two where Gyokeres scored: a 5-0 triumph over Leeds United and a 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest.
Continued contributions like this are essential as the team faces a demanding schedule with matches every weekend and midweek until the next international break.
