Time’s Up: The Return of a…

The time has come for Liverpool to call upon a legendary player to strengthen the squad—this current performance simply isn’t acceptable.

On Sunday, Liverpool experienced their fourth consecutive defeat, falling 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield. This result is a significant setback, prompting a wave of panic within the club.

In an effort to ‘improve’ a title-winning squad, Liverpool shelled out an astonishing sum, breaking their transfer record twice and spending more on full-backs than they ever have before.

However, they have now faced defeats against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, Chelsea, and United in a row. Even more concerning is that the team’s performances have been lackluster, often necessitating second-half substitutions to salvage results.

It’s clear that Liverpool needs to make some tough decisions, one of which is obvious—bringing back a proven winner.

It’s Time for Andy Robertson’s Return

For some time now, it’s been evident that Andy Robertson needs to reclaim his position at left-back. His presence in the team significantly enhances their ability to progress the ball.

The defeat against United highlighted this starkly. Milos Kerkez struggled considerably, both in terms of ball control and defensive judgement.

He appeared out of sync with the defense, misplacing passes, and seemed uncertain about when to advance forward. Kerkez was brought in as a dynamic attacking full-back meant to disrupt opposing defenses—yet we have seen little of that potential.

As a result, Liverpool looks more vulnerable at the back and has struggled for creativity in possession. Last season, Robertson was the second-best progressive passer in the team, just behind Trent Alexander-Arnold. Currently, without either, the Reds are grappling with how to make the Kerkez arrangement work.

This isn’t to suggest that Kerkez should be dismissed as a failure. He remains a very young talent with a promising future ahead of him.

However, for the time being, Robertson is the superior choice who offers significantly more. Infusing the team with his experience, leadership, and quality is far more crucial than focusing on developing Kerkez at this juncture.
