Middlesbrough has turned down Wolverhampton Wanderers’ official request to speak with manager Rob Edwards, as the Premier League club continues its search for a successor to the recently dismissed Vitor Pereira, according to a report by BBC Sport.
Wolves, who currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League with just two points from their last ten games, have identified Edwards as their top candidate after Gary O’Neil opted out of consideration earlier this week. Nevertheless, Middlesbrough, placed third in the Championship, is committed to keeping their manager and has rejected Wolves’ overture for negotiations.
Since his appointment at the Riverside Stadium in June, Edwards has rejuvenated Boro’s hopes for promotion, and it is reported that the club would demand a substantial compensation package should Wolves attempt to secure his services.
At 42 years old, Edwards made more than 100 appearances for Wolves as a player between 2004 and 2008 and has also held roles as a coach and interim manager in 2016. His managerial achievements include leading Luton Town to their first-ever promotion to the Premier League in 2023.
Wolves, currently eight points from safety, are set to face Chelsea this weekend without a permanent manager. Their pursuit of Edwards now seems uncertain, as Middlesbrough stands firm in its intention to retain one of English football’s most promising coaches.
