Rayo Vallecano 2-2 Lech Poznan

Rayo Vallecano faced Lech Poznan at Vallecas, knowing that a victory would significantly boost their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the Conference League.

The lively Poznan supporters were in attendance, creating a vibrant atmosphere, especially after the previous evening’s events. The match kicked off with an intense pace, as Rayo attempted two long-range shots within the first four minutes, both narrowly missing the target. However, it was Lech who struck first with their initial substantial attack. A cross from the right found an unmarked Luis Palma in the box, and his header looked impressive as it soared into the far corner past the goalkeeper.

Despite the setback, Rayo regrouped and began to press Lech into their own half. The Polish side, however, appeared comfortable defending with all eleven players often packed into their third of the pitch. Rayo maintained a series of half-chances and near misses, but a crucial slip by the home defense allowed Lech to exploit the right flank. Joel Pereira delivered a cross that set up Antoni Kozubal’s stunning first-time finish into the left corner just five minutes before halftime, capping off a well-orchestrated move.

The second half began similarly, but a dramatic quadruple substitution by Inigo Perez revitalized Rayo’s fight. Moments later, Bartosz Mrozek pulled off a spectacular save from Alvaro Garcia, but shortly thereafter, Isi Palazon, one of the fresh substitutes, scored from an Andrei Ratiu cross at the far post.

Rayo’s attacks began to result in shots on goal, prompting Lech to cautiously regain their attacking rhythm. As the game grew increasingly frantic, Lech’s defense held firm, but Perez’s substitutions proved effective once again as he introduced Jorge de Frutos. Just three minutes later, De Frutos powered in an equalizer at the back post, energizing the Rayo players and supporters alike. Pacha Espino, despite a shaky performance, nearly turned the tide further, striking the crossbar from a sharp angle.

An Isi shot was deflected wide during stoppage time, but as the final seconds approached, Vallecas was ready to celebrate. A long ball behind the right-back sat tantalizingly until Alvaro Garcia controlled it and slotted home into the far corner, igniting the stadium.

Before the match, Perez remarked that his team never wins easily, and while he may desire a straightforward win every now and then, it’s hard not to get swept up in the joy and pride felt by the fans. Though Rayo’s performance had its flaws, this match will surely be remembered in the neighborhood for years to come.
