England manager Thomas Tuchel sparked significant discussion with his squad selection for the upcoming World Cup, particularly following Adam Wharton‘s standout performance for Crystal Palace during their historic European night only fueled further debate regarding his exclusion from the squad.

Wharton delivered a remarkable man-of-the-match performance as the Eagles claimed victory over Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final, marking the club’s first-ever European trophy.

Despite his exceptional performance, Wharton will not be part of the team for this summer’s tournament, as Tuchel opted for other midfield choices, including Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, Kobbie Mainoo, Jordan Henderson, Eberechi Eze, Jude Bellingham, and Morgan Rogers.

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle expressed surprise over the decision, sharing his thoughts before and after Wharton’s impressive showing in Leipzig. “I was a bit surprised,” he stated on TNT Sports prior to the 1-0 victory. “I really appreciate how he advances play and makes incisive passes that can split defenses.

“I’m not sure we have many others who can do that consistently from a deeper role, so my eyebrows definitely raised when I saw he wasn’t included.”

After the match, Hoddle reiterated, “This showcases the quality we possess. I would have included him in the squad. He is an exceptional footballer.

“He’s a great professional. He could easily represent England, but which midfielder would you leave out?”

Joleon Lescott, former England and Manchester City defender, also commented on Wharton’s resilience: “He has not allowed that decision to affect his performance.

“He is a top-tier professional and is mentally strong enough to handle setbacks. As I mentioned before the match, he could easily don the England jersey.”

It certainly feels like a tough call to leave a player of Wharton’s caliber at home, even with Tuchel’s array of options in the midfield.
