Manchester United have shifted their transfer targets to Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton (21), who is now reportedly preferred over Brighton’s Carlos Baleba for their plans next summer, as per Sky Sports.
Manager Ruben Amorim has emphasized the need for a central midfielder in 2025, with a long-held interest in Baleba. However, recent concerns regarding the 21-year-old’s performance have surfaced due to a lackluster start to the season. The Cameroon international has yet to play a full 90 minutes in the Premier League this season, raising doubts about his form and reliability.
In contrast, Wharton has been thriving at Selhurst Park, receiving acclaim for his poise, range of passing, and tactical acumen. Within the corridors of Old Trafford, some consider the England Under-21 international to be the “next Michael Carrick,” viewed as a player who can effectively stabilize and enhance Amorim’s developing midfield with both control and creativity.
Though Wharton recently signed a contract with Palace that runs until 2029, making him a significant investment, his potential and Premier League experience render him a highly appealing target.
As Manchester United prepares for a summer of change, Wharton being prioritized highlights a strategic shift towards youth, intelligence, and long-term midfield stability.
