Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa has recognized the need for his team to adapt their playing style following the return of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe, though he asserted their presence strengthens the squad. Despite recent improvements, Real Madrid faced an unexpected loss to RCD Mallorca on Saturday, just their second and third matches back from injury.
Although this setback poses a challenge to their La Liga title ambitions, Arbeloa expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
“Real Madrid has a history of rising to the occasion against top competitors. Bayern Munich is enjoying an outstanding season, and we are well aware of the challenge they present. Our past encounters with Bayern are always significant, and the Bernabéu is set to host another thrilling Champions League night.”
Keys to the Bayern Munich Quarter-Final
Regarding his expectations, Arbeloa emphasized the importance of team cohesion, an aspect Real Madrid has been criticized for lacking in recent seasons.
“To achieve victory in football, you must excel in every phase of the game. A great team is built on cohesion and a collective mentality. This is what I am stressing to our players. We possess the finest individual talents, and it’s crucial that we operate as the best team in the world by utilizing that talent for the benefit of the group.”
Bayern Munich enters the matchup as one of the top contenders for the European Cup, and Arbeloa had high praise for their manager, Vincent Kompany.
“They are exceptionally well-coached; their identity and style of play are evident. They defend aggressively, compelling opponents to adapt, with players consistently tracking back. Offensively, they create opportunities down the flanks with highly skilled players. They are a balanced team with numerous strengths, and they are immensely committed defensively. Kompany deserves credit for the tremendous job he’s doing at Bayern Munich.”
‘It’s Clear We Play Differently with Mbappe and Bellingham’
Interestingly, there’s been some discourse in Madrid suggesting that the team could be more effective without Mbappe in the lineup.
“Mbappe brings different qualities compared to Brahim, which requires us to adjust our playstyle. However, I’m thrilled to have such remarkable players at my disposal. Mbappe joined us to participate in matches of this caliber, and it’s a blessing to have a full squad.”
“Ultimately, my views are my priority, and it is a privilege to have a player like Mbappe in our ranks. I genuinely sympathize with the defenders who must contend with Real Madrid.”
Bellingham, too, has faced his share of criticism this season, as he seeks to regain his best form and clarity in his role.
“What stands out is that we are a better team overall, and I truly believe that. He possesses a skill set different from some of his teammates, and as we play together, adaptations must be made. That’s the essence of football—building strong relationships among players. It’s a welcomed challenge to incorporate Bellingham into the lineup.”
Arbeloa experienced his fifth loss in 19 matches as Real Madrid’s manager this past weekend, just one shy of Xabi Alonso’s total. Nevertheless, the squad has delivered some of its strongest performances under Arbeloa in European competitions, successfully eliminating Benfica and Manchester City in the knockout stages.
