Max O’Leary, West Bromwich Albion’s goalkeeper, has revealed that the team’s recent improvement is a result of candid discussions among players. The Baggies have secured back-to-back goalless draws, putting them two points above the Championship relegation zone. O’Leary attributes this turnaround to honest conversations following their 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth.
“We’ve had some honest discussions with each other,” O’Leary said during an interview with BBC Radio WM. “The game against Portsmouth wasn’t good enough, we all recognized that. It’s not just about formation; it’s essential to get the fundamentals right, with everyone giving maximum effort and holding themselves accountable.”
The 29-year-old, who has joined The Hawthorns on a short-term contract in January, has been pivotal in helping the team achieve their first consecutive clean sheets since October 2024.
“Having a solid defensive foundation is crucial. When it’s 0-0, you’re still in the game,” O’Leary added. “Even though I’ve just started here, being able to secure points puts us in a good position. It keeps us competitive at halftime, in the 70th and 80th minutes, which allows us the chance to steal a goal.”
Next, West Brom will take on Norwich in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday at 15:00 GMT.
