Arbeloa Struggles with Big…

Real Madrid’s defensive woes persist as they prepare for their upcoming match against Villarreal, despite some cautiously optimistic updates from Valdebebas.

There is hope that Raul Asencio may be fit for selection after being substituted at half-time during the Champions League victory over Monaco due to a shin injury, but the overall situation at centre-back remains concerning.

Defensive instability has plagued Real Madrid for many seasons, a challenge that Alvaro Arbeloa now faces as coach.

Once again, Arbeloa may need to make adjustments at La Ceramica, as several key defenders are either unavailable or not fully fit.

Even if Asencio takes the field, he would do so while still managing his injury, and Antonio Rudiger continues to be kept from full training under careful watch by the medical staff.

A Growing List of Challenges

The situation is compounded by the suspension of Aurelien Tchouaméni, who cannot be utilized for a defensive reshuffle.

Diving deeper into the squad, the list of defensive concerns continues to expand. Eder Militao is out until at least March, and David Alaba remains limited in his capabilities as he recovers from a serious knee injury.

Rudiger’s training is being monitored carefully, and Asencio’s shin injury only adds to the uncertainty. Currently, only Dean Huijsen appears to be ready for the match in optimal condition.

However, even Huijsen’s fitness comes with its own concerns, as he recently returned from a prolonged absence due to muscular issues that sidelined him for nearly a month.

Implications for the Team

This defensive instability could disrupt the overall structure of the team as they face Villarreal.

Federico Valverde is already playing out of position, and should Asencio’s fitness remain in question, Arbeloa might need to rely on Alvaro Carreras as a makeshift centre-back.

This substitution would have a ripple effect; moving Carreras centrally would leave a void at left-back. While Fran Garcia is available, Eduardo Camavinga could once again find himself asked to switch roles.

This adjustment would further weaken the midfield, straining an already delicate balance as Real Madrid gears up for a challenging away match.
