The Argentine Football Association (AFA) will pay tribute to Lionel Messi this weekend by observing a minute of applause in the 10th minute of all domestic matches, following his retirement from international football.
In a handwritten note shared on Instagram, Messi confirmed on Monday that his final appearance for Argentina was during the 2026 World Cup final, where they were defeated by Spain. At the age of 39, he has decided to retire from international competition.
The AFA announced on Wednesday, “In honor of Lionel Messi’s remarkable career with the Argentina national team, all matches during the upcoming matchday across men’s and women’s divisions will be paused in the 10th minute of the first half for a minute of applause.”
Additionally, the statement mentioned that “stadiums equipped with video boards should play a tribute video before the match begins,” referencing the tribute montage that the AFA shared on their social media platforms following Messi’s announcement.
Since his senior debut in 2005, Messi has become Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals, participated in six World Cups, and achieved victory in the tournament in 2022—marking Argentina’s first win in 36 years and their third overall. He also holds records for the most matches played (34) and most wins (23) in World Cup history.
“I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give,” Messi expressed on Instagram on Monday. “This decision was difficult—painful even—but I understand that it is time to move on.”
