Arsenal faced their second consecutive defeat in preseason, falling 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling matchup at the Emirates Stadium.
The German team took an early lead, scoring just five minutes in with a stunning strike from Italian talent Samuele Inácio, who finished expertly after receiving a brilliant pass from Felix Nmecha.
Just before the hydration break in the first half, Arsenal found themselves 2-0 down as Greek prodigy Konstantinos Karetsas struck a brilliant goal into the top left corner.
Arsenal responded early in the second half when Christos Tzolis, a standout performer, provided an assist for substitute Ethan Nwaneri, who scored easily from close range.
However, Dortmund quickly restored their two-goal cushion through Joane Gadou, who capitalized on a defensive error following a corner kick.
Arsenal managed to cut the deficit when Viktor Gyökeres converted a penalty after Tzolis was brought down in the area. They thought they had equalized late in stoppage time when Gabriel Martinelli found the back of the net, but his goal was ruled offside.
A penalty shootout took place after the match, much to the crowd’s delight. Arsenal redeemed themselves from previous shootout disappointments, converting perfectly to win 5-4 against Dortmund.
The atmosphere in the stadium was electric before kickoff as Arsenal’s latest major signing, Bruno Guimarães, made his debut appearance in front of fans following his £75 million ($101 million) transfer from Newcastle.
The Premier League champions were welcomed with a lively rendition of North London Forever, which nearly propelled them into an early lead thanks to a couple of excellent corners delivered by Martin Odegaard.
Despite Dortmund’s early goal, Arsenal showed resilience with several scoring opportunities, including a free kick just outside the box, which Gyökeres failed to convert effectively.
Dortmund’s defense stepped up, forcing Alexander Meyer into action, but the Gunners struggled to mount serious pressure on the goal.
Gyökeres nearly found the net with a powerful strike in the 26th minute following a brilliant run by Max Dowman, but the ball hit the crossbar instead. Shortly after, Karetsas made a sweeping run from midfield and scored a stunning goal, curling it past Gabriel and leaving Kepa helpless.
Dortmund came close to increasing their lead through Felix Nmecha, whose shot narrowly missed the target, but soon after, Nwaneri managed to pull one back for Arsenal.
The Gunners exhibited defensive vulnerabilities as Dortmund restored their 3-1 lead, raising concerns for Mikel Arteta as the new season approaches.
While Gyökeres’ penalty gave Arsenal a fighting chance, the multitude of substitutions disrupted their rhythm in pursuit of an equalizer. Martinelli’s late goal was met with boos from the crowd as he was ruled offside, leaving Arteta with much to contemplate in the days ahead.
