Athletic Club is in the process of finding a new manager as Ernesto Valverde is set to depart when his contract concludes at the end of the current season. They have identified Edin Terzic as their primary choice, and it appears nearly certain that he will take the helm for the 2026-27 season.
Having stepped down from his position at Borussia Dortmund following their defeat to Real Madrid in the 2024 Champions League final, Terzic is favored by Athletic’s president, Jon Uriarte. Additionally, club legend Andoni Iraola will also be available this summer after leaving Premier League club Bournemouth, but it has been indicated that this is not the right time for him to return to San Mames.

Athletic has been in discussions with Terzic and his representatives lately, and according to El Correo (via MD), a deal has been reached for him to take over Valverde’s responsibilities this summer. The 43-year-old is reportedly already engaged in planning for the squad ahead of next season to prepare Los Leones for a turnaround after this year’s setbacks.
Terzic set to succeed Valverde in Bilbao
While Valverde’s final season with Athletic may not have met expectations, his return was marked by significant achievements. Under his management, the team secured their first Copa del Rey title in 40 years in 2024 and earned a place in the Champions League the following season.
Terzic aspires to achieve similar goals during his upcoming tenure at San Mames, beginning in July. The supporters are sure to rally behind him, hoping for success reminiscent of previous esteemed foreign managers such as Jupp Heynckes and Marcelo Bielsa, who have left a lasting legacy in Bilbao.
