Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

We sought your opinions following the Champions League match on Wednesday between Atletico Madrid and Arsenal.

Here’s a selection of your comments:

Vince: That was a great performance! We should have secured the victory. Atletico had a solid 20 minutes in the second half, but with David Raya in goal, one of the very best, and a defense that deserves recognition, there’s a lot to be optimistic about. Ebere Eze was unplayable with his pace, and that penalty should have definitely been awarded. Keep this up, and we’ll find ourselves in the final—anything less would be a disgrace.

Iain: Let’s not dwell on the penalties. We demonstrated tonight that we can completely outplay this team. Sure, they had their moments fueled by their home crowd, but I’m not worried about the return leg.

Sam: A draw at one of Europe’s toughest venues isn’t a bad result at all. I felt we could have pulled off a win if it weren’t for some questionable refereeing again. The handball call is a 50-50 in my opinion, but if the one in the PSG game was awarded, consistency should apply here too. Not giving the foul on Eze as a penalty is simply inexcusable! How did they review it and decide it wasn’t a penalty? It was clear-cut! Regardless, it’s a respectable result that puts us in a good position for the second leg, and hopefully, a place in the final!

George: We had a solid performance, but the same can’t be said for the referee. The usual refereeing standards in the Champions League were on show. Diego Simeone deserved a yellow card for his sideline antics. If the officiating had been better, we could have won this match.

Matthew: It was a challenging, tense match as expected. Arsenal showed good control at times but struggled to find that finishing touch. The intention was evident, but we lacked clinical execution. Full credit to Atletico—they were disciplined, compact, and hard to penetrate, which is classic Atletico. They frustrate, stay organized, and capitalize on mistakes. Overall, it’s not a bad outcome, but it’s not completely satisfying either. The team needs to be sharper next time.

Nigel: It’s disappointing to say, but Mikel Arteta seems to be hindering a talented squad with his negative approach and lack of a new game plan. Sticking to 4-3-3 week after week, bizarre substitutions, and no tactical changes—it’s disheartening and feels like someone out of ideas. This is unacceptable—his time is up. It really saddens me to say that.
