Barcelona in Talks to Sign…

Barcelona is planning to enhance several positions within Hansi Flick’s squad during the upcoming summer transfer window, with a focus on securing a centre-back and a striker. Additionally, the club is considering the acquisition of a new goalkeeper.

Since joining from Espanyol last summer, Joan Garcia has made a significant impact, but Barcelona will soon need to make a decision regarding his backup. Currently, Wojciech Szczesny occupies this role, but he is likely to retire within the next 18 months. Although his contract lasts until 2027, there is a possibility he could depart in 2026 depending on the situation.

With Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future at Spotify Camp Nou uncertain, Barcelona recognizes the need to find a goalkeeper to support Garcia. The leading candidate for this role is Alex Remiro of Real Sociedad and the Spanish national team, a player Barcelona has been monitoring for several months.

According to MD, sporting director Deco has recently engaged in discussions with Remiro’s representatives as the club positions itself to pursue the goalkeeper. They view him as a potential bargain due to his contract situation, which may make him more affordable than in the past.

Remiro’s current contract at Anoeta runs until 2027, but if he does not sign an extension before the summer transfer window, his release clause, which is now set at €50 million, will drop to €15 million. Barcelona is willing to pursue a deal in 2026 or wait to acquire him as a free agent, especially since Szczesny is also under contract until 2027.

Remiro Open to Joining Barcelona as a Backup

Interestingly, Remiro has reportedly expressed a willingness to join Barcelona, fully aware that he would serve as Garcia’s backup. He views it as an “unmissable” opportunity, reminiscent of fellow Basque player Iñigo Martínez, who made the move from Athletic Club to the Catalan capital in the summer of 2023.

It will be intriguing to see how the situation with Remiro develops, as he would be an excellent option for depth at Barcelona. However, the club may opt to wait until 2027 to secure his signature.
