Barcelona Plans to Retain…

In January, Barcelona secured the services of young Uruguayan defender Patricio Pacifico on loan from Defensor Sporting. The 20-year-old left-back made a strong impression upon his arrival in Catalonia, earning numerous opportunities to secure a permanent deal. However, most of these prospects have diminished in the past week.

Last Sunday, Pacifico sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during a match with Barca Atletic, which is expected to sideline him for 8-9 months. This injury raises concerns about his long-term future at Barcelona, as management might hesitate to commit to a player with a significant injury history.

Nevertheless, Barcelona are actively exploring options to keep Pacifico for at least one more season. According to MD, negotiations have begun with Defensor Sporting for a potential loan extension. This arrangement could provide the young talent another shot at securing a permanent position once he is back on the field.

Decision Expected Before the Season’s End

Barcelona aims to resolve this situation before the season wraps up. They are eager to ensure Pacifico receives care from their medical staff throughout his recovery, a process that has affected several players in recent years, including Gavi and Andreas Christensen.

If sporting director Deco can finalize a loan extension with Defensor Sporting, which seems feasible, Pacifico will have ample opportunity to prove he deserves a permanent role at the club. He is anticipated to return to play in early 2027, giving him the entire second half of next season to demonstrate his value to the team’s management.

Meanwhile, Pacifico is awaiting surgery, which has been postponed due to swelling in his knee that has yet to subside.
