Real Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo has faced substantial criticism throughout Portugal‘s World Cup journey. Nevertheless, he has found unexpected support from Barcelona midfielder Gavi. The two will clash in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, where a spot in the quarter-finals against the United States or Belgium awaits the victor.
The 41-year-old forward continues to lead the Portugal team as captain, having started in all four matches and netting three goals. His two goals against Uzbekistan were pivotal for the team’s 5-0 victory, while his penalty goal against Croatia secured Portugal’s progress in their initial knockout match. However, in the games against DR Congo (1-1) and Colombia (0-0), Ronaldo has struggled to find his rhythm.
Some critics have suggested that Ronaldo should be replaced in Roberto Martinez’s lineup; however, the Portugal coach has defended his choices.
Gavi Supports Ronaldo – “I Only Hear It From Fans”
Ahead of the World Cup Iberian derby, Gavi was asked if he believed Portugal might be better off without Ronaldo.
“I always hear that, but from those who are not on his team—mostly fans. Those who share the field with him undoubtedly have immense respect for him. Clearly, Cristiano is among the greatest players in history and can change the game at any moment,” he stated in an interview with MD.
Real Madrid’s Interests in the Spain-Portugal Matchup
Naturally, supporters of Madrid will wish for Ronaldo’s success, although they have vested interests on both sides of the field. New signings Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella will also be participating for their respective teams. Silva has primarily played a limited role off the bench for Martinez, while Cucurella has dazzled for Spain, contributing three assists in their appearances to date.
