Benfica President Supports…

The ongoing controversy involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Jr. has escalated, prompting Benfica president Rui Costa to publicly defend his player.

This dispute originated during Benfica’s recent match against Real Madrid, resulting in a one-match suspension by UEFA for Prestianni due to allegations of a racist remark aimed at Vinicius Jr.

As the team traveled to Madrid for the Champions League playoff’s second leg, Costa took the opportunity to address the media and firmly express his position.

He stated, “Prestianni is being labeled a racist, but that is far from the truth. I can assure you of that.”

“I cannot confirm exactly what was or wasn’t said. What matters to us is Prestianni’s word; more importantly, it’s knowing the character of the players we have within our club,” he added.

Costa recognized that this incident has created unease within the club; however, he emphasized that Benfica remains steadfast in supporting their midfielder.

As the team prepared for their crucial European match, he remarked, “There has clearly been a difficult conversation among us; it’s uncomfortable for the club and the player, who is facing harsh criticism. I assure you, he is not a racist player; otherwise, he would not be representing Benfica.”

The president underscored that the situation has been tough for everyone involved.

However, he clarified that the event should not reflect on the club’s core values.

“This incident does not impact what Benfica represents as an inclusive and anti-racist club, and we would never tolerate a racist player in our squad,” he stated emphatically.

“I want to make this very clear.”

Costa reiterated his commitment to the club’s stance: “I will say it again: Benfica does not permit a racist player on the team.”

He further clarified the club’s position, emphasizing, “Benfica supports Prestianni, not only because he is our player, but because he is not racist. He is unjustly facing these accusations, and for that reason, he deserves our backing,” he concluded.
