Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Brazil, has stated that he does not plan to create a specific “anti-Erling Haaland strategy” as his team aims to contain the Manchester City striker and overcome Norway in their quest for the World Cup quarterfinals.
After finishing top of Group C, Brazil edged past Japan with a late winner from Gabriel Martinelli.
Brazil’s upcoming match against Norway at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday poses a significant challenge as they aim to secure their sixth World Cup title. The winners will advance to face either England or co-hosts Mexico.
Ancelotti emphasizes the importance of focusing on Norway’s entire team rather than solely targeting Haaland. He mentioned that Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães will be instrumental in managing Haaland, but the overall strategy is to contain a well-organized opposition.
“I don’t believe in an ‘anti-Haaland’ plan,” Ancelotti remarked during a press conference. “My players know how to defend, having faced him before. Our team is in prime condition, but we must keep improving.”
Adding on Haaland’s impact, Ancelotti stated, “Everyone knows how he plays; I don’t need to explain to my defenders how to handle him. They have come up against him multiple times. Our focus is on preparing well for the match and recognizing the strengths of our opponents, who pose a significant offensive threat.”
Bruno Guimarães acknowledged Haaland’s talent, stating, “He is exceptional. We must balance our marking and attacking. It’s vital that someone stays close to him because he can change a game with a single touch, and we can’t afford to give him that opportunity.”
Brazil will be missing midfielder Lucas Paquetá due to a hamstring injury sustained against Japan, but Barcelona forward Raphinha may return following a thigh injury.
Norway’s coach Ståle Solbakken believes the match will not solely hinge on Haaland going up against Brazil’s solid center-back duo of Gabriel and Marquinhos.

Solbakken acknowledged Brazil’s strength, stating, “They possess one of the best defensive pairings in the tournament, with players of high international caliber. While there will be intense battles between them and Erling, it’s primarily about Brazil versus Norway for me.”
He mentioned, “Brazil is the favorite, as expected, but we are hopeful of putting up a strong fight. We must be at our absolute best if we wish to have a chance.”
Solbakken anticipates that Dortmund full-back Julian Ryerson will be fit to play after recovering from a thigh injury sustained against Senegal. Meanwhile, defender Holmgren Pedersen is being monitored due to some recent health issues.
