Cardiff Exudes Swagger…

Chris Willock asserts that Cardiff City has developed a newfound “swagger” under the leadership of Brian Barry-Murphy, which can propel the Bluebirds toward their promotion goals.

Following their relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time in over two decades last season, Cardiff finds itself leading League One as we head into 2026.

While acknowledging the hard work still ahead before celebrating a return to the Championship, winger Willock emphasizes the growing confidence within Barry-Murphy’s team, which is clearly evident on the field.

“We’re fostering a strong sense of togetherness,” said Willock.

He played a crucial role in Cardiff’s recent comeback victory against Stevenage, contributing to the late goal that was ultimately deflected in by Yousef Salech.

Cardiff’s latest victory—their seventh in the last eight league matches—has resulted in a total of 16 points gained from losing positions this season.

“Even when we go a goal down, we remain confident. We trust in our playing style, and we know we can challenge teams,” Willock added.

“You can sense it on the pitch; everyone feels we can come back from any deficit, and nothing is settled until the final whistle blows.”

“We’re playing attractive football with confidence and swagger—that’s been our goal. It’s something the manager has aimed for since the start of the season, and we’re starting to see the results of our hard work.”

After a disappointing first season following relegation, Willock has been thriving alongside a mix of experienced players and promising youngsters this season.

“Last season was frustrating for all of us,” the ex-Queens Park Rangers player reflected. “It was challenging to find positives, but this season feels refreshing. It’s great to see young players stepping up and getting their chances; it’s beneficial for both the team and the club’s future.”

“Players are enjoying their football, and it’s evident that everyone is finding joy in the game. Long may it continue.”

Cardiff sits three points ahead of Lincoln City in second place and four points clear of Bradford City in third as they prepare to face ninth-placed Wycombe Wanderers on New Year’s Day.

Despite their strong standing in the league, Willock insists Cardiff will “keep pushing” under the guidance of former Manchester City academy coach Barry-Murphy.

“It would be shortsighted to think we can rest on our laurels; there are still plenty of points to be claimed,” he stated. “Brian is an insightful young coach, and we have faith in his leadership. We’re confident there’s even more to come from both him and us.”
