Cardinale on Italian…

In a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Gerry Cardinale, owner of AC Milan, emphasized the necessity for Italian football to prioritize ‘sports infrastructure’ while hinting that city rivals Inter ‘didn’t show up’ during the 2025 Champions League Final.

On Friday, Gazzetta and Corriere della Sera published a comprehensive interview with Cardinale where he candidly discussed the team’s disappointing performance this season and hinted at potential changes for the 2026-27 campaign.

Cardinale remarked on the current state of Serie A, expressing a desire for greater attention to fundamental issues, such as modernizing Italian football and addressing the reasons behind Italy’s consecutive World Cup absences. “Instead, we see more controversy than constructive discussion,” he stated.

“The problem extends beyond Serie A; it’s also about failing to reach Champions League Finals and suffering significant losses. It’s essential to compete effectively on the European stage,” he added.

Cardinale further noted, “The disparity in TV rights revenues between the Premier League and other leagues, including Italy, is an alarming 4-to-1.”

“The gap in Italian football is widening. The reality is that significant investment is essential for any solutions,” he stated.

“I have a good understanding of financial matters. However, I don’t aim to impose American practices directly. I recognize that the landscape differs in Italy, and I need to adapt accordingly. Surrounding myself with knowledgeable Italians is part of this essential learning journey.”
