Celtic Eye Record-Breaking…

Celtic are on high alert this Friday morning, as reports from Hungarian media, notably m4sport.hu, indicate that Robbie Keane has stepped down as head coach of Ferencvaros after one and a half years at the club. This development is significant, especially considering the links between the 45-year-old and the Parkhead managerial position throughout the season.

Celtic’s prospects as Ireland’s record scorer departs Hungary

Keane had signed an extension with Ferencvaros in December, successfully leading the team into the Europa League knockout stages. However, the domestic season didn’t meet expectations, as Ferencvaros finished just a point shy of ETO FC Győr, marking the club’s first failure to win the title in eight years. They were also eliminated in the round of 16 of the Europa League, losing 4-2 on aggregate to Braga.

Celtic’s managerial landscape after a tumultuous season

The season for Celtic has been extremely chaotic: Brendan Rodgers resigned in October, Martin O’Neill took over as interim manager, and Wilfried Nancy was appointed permanently in December, only to be dismissed after just 33 days. O’Neill then returned to stabilize the situation from January onward.

O’Neill, who brought seven trophies to Celtic during his first tenure from 2000 to 2005, led the team to their record-breaking 56th league title this season, clinching it with a 3-1 victory over Hearts on the final matchday. He is now expected to step down following Saturday’s Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline Athletic at Hampden Park.

Assessing Keane’s track record and Celtic’s options

During his loan spell at Parkhead in 2010, Keane netted 12 goals in 16 league matches, earning the Celtic Fans’ Player of the Year award. Since then, he has proven his managerial prowess, achieving 51 wins, 16 draws, and 15 losses over 82 matches at Ferencvaros, which translates to a win percentage of 62.2%. He secured one league title and one Hungarian Cup during his time there. However, the possibility of him considering an offer from Slovan Bratislava remains, as their CEO has expressed interest in Keane, making timely action from Celtic imperative.

Should Celtic consider hiring Keane this summer?

Celtic requires a permanent manager who possesses a winning mentality, a clear vision, and the emotional intelligence to unify a team that has experienced four different managers in just one season. Keane fulfills many of these criteria with his impressive 62% win rate in Hungary, his Europa League progress, and his ability to nurture young talents, including Hungary international Alex Toth, who has since moved to Bournemouth, indicating he is more of a builder than just an inheritor of talent.

His connection with Celtic is significant, but it cannot be the sole basis for his recruitment. The compelling argument for Keane is that Celtic, heading into a summer of squad rejuvenation on a limited budget, require someone who can derive maximum value from the existing roster rather than demand heavy spending on new signings. He has consistently demonstrated this ability in Budapest.

Nonetheless, the political nuances surrounding his previous role at Maccabi Tel Aviv remain contentious and could divide opinions among Celtic supporters. This issue is unlikely to fade away.

With alternative candidates dwindling and Motherwell’s Jens Berthel Askou accepting a position with Toulouse earlier this week, it is crucial for Celtic to act promptly, as Keane is currently the most viable and credible option available. The board should take decisive action before Slovan Bratislava potentially makes their move.
