Channel Islands Top…

“He looks around 32, but I think he’s only 25,” jokes Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance, referring to one of his standout players.

But on a serious note, Charlton Gauvain is poised to make his 200th appearance for the Channel Island club.

Since making his debut shortly after turning 16, the creative midfielder has played 199 matches, contributing 37 goals and solidifying his status as one of the Green Lions’ key players.

“He’s an extraordinary talent,” Vance shared on BBC Radio Guernsey.

“Despite facing some significant injuries, he’s a fighter who keeps pushing through. Sometimes, though, that’s his downfall; he could benefit from taking a break when he’s hurt. Yet, when he’s at his best, he’s simply unstoppable.”

“No one, not even the Jersey fans, can deny that he’s the finest player in the Channel Islands.”

Gauvain’s exceptional talent was recognized early on as he trained with Bristol City’s academy until the age of 15, following a path similar to other players like Alex Scott, Ben Acey, Jack Griffin, and Tim Ap Sion.

However, injuries have hindered his career progression, leading him back to the island where he has thrived with Guernsey FC.

Having played in the Isthmian League until last season, Gauvain has caught the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid, yet the right opportunity has yet to arise.

“He has had offers, albeit not fully professional, but very close,” Vance explained.

“Perhaps relocating wasn’t appealing enough, but there’s no question about his talent. He should have made it as a professional; unfortunately, injuries struck right when he was being considered for a second chance at Bristol City.”

“If he aspires to go further in his career, we’ll support him wholeheartedly. But at 25, he might be comfortable here with a good job and enjoying time with the team. Maybe his window has closed, but in football, you never truly know.”

Charlton Gauvain comes off injured

His most significant injury occurred in the summer of 2022 during a pre-season match, requiring ankle surgery and forcing him to miss nearly the entire season. Since then, he has become a cornerstone of Vance’s squad and also scored for Guernsey’s representative team in their recent victory over Jersey 3-1 in May to win the Muratti Vase for the first time in eight years.

“I began this journey nine years ago, and at 25, I’ve come a long way,” Gauvain reflects.

“Reaching 200 appearances will mean a lot to me.”

Assuming no last-minute issues arise, Gauvain will achieve his double-century during Saturday’s match against Crawley Down Gatwick in the Southern Combination Premier Division.

This match will be significant as it will be the first meeting between the two teams since Guernsey’s record-setting 11-0 victory over the Sussex side in January 2014.

“My main goal is to stay fit,” says Gauvain. “I want to avoid injuries that could set me back. While I’m getting older, I’m not sure if another chance to play elsewhere will come up, but if it does, I’ll definitely consider it.”
