Interim Chelsea manager Calum McFarlane has urged for an end to leaks regarding team news, emphasizing that the matter has been “addressed” as they prepare for their FA Cup semi-final against Leeds.
The 38-year-old was appointed as temporary head coach following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Brighton.
On the day of the Brighton match, news of Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer’s absences was allegedly leaked via a social media post by the barber of defender Marc Cucurella.
This incident follows a pattern of leaks during Rosenior’s management, including notable breaches of information prior to both legs of Chelsea’s 8-2 Champions League defeat to Paris St-Germain.
McFarlane, who will remain in charge for the remainder of the season and lead the team into Sunday’s match at Wembley, stated that the squad has been reminded of the importance of keeping the lineup confidential.
“We’ve tackled this issue and it’s been discussed before,” McFarlane declared. “It’s crucial that this stops happening. We’ve spoken to the players about its significance to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
His comments come amid questions regarding the professionalism of the Chelsea squad, following allegations that player morale was lacking under Rosenior, prompting a change in leadership.
Rosenior had remarked that only “three or four” players from his starting lineup displayed the necessary “attitude, spirit, and determination” after the defeat at Brighton.
McFarlane expressed a collective sense of accountability within the club, noting, “Everyone here understands their responsibility – from the players to the coaching staff. Our recent performances haven’t been up to par, and we aim to deliver a strong showing on Sunday.”
“Football is often about momentum. We’ve faced a losing streak, but one positive result can change everything.”
