After just one season with Standard Liege, Chilean midfielder Nayel Mehssatou appears poised to depart. According to a report from Sudinfo, he is likely to return to his former club, Kortrijk. Mehssatou initially left Kortrijk after their relegation from the Pro League two seasons ago but joined Standard Liege on a free transfer. With Kortrijk now back in the top tier, the versatile midfielder is set to rejoin his previous team, providing a much-needed boost as they aim to establish themselves as a stable presence in the Pro League and avoid another relegation.
Mehssatou joined Kortrijk in January 2022 from Anderlecht, going on to make 108 appearances for the club and scoring five goals. Throughout his time there, he transitioned from a full-back to a dynamic midfielder capable of playing both defensively and offensively. While he can still fill in as a full-back, his versatility will be a significant asset for Kortrijk. At Standard Liege, Mehssatou featured in 31 matches, though he often came off the bench rather than starting.
As part of Kortrijk’s summer signings, Mehssatou looks set to join Chelsea youngster Harrison Murray-Campbell in strengthening the squad.
