Christian Eriksen is anticipated to be released from the hospital “soon” following his collapse during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, according to Denmark’s national team doctor on Monday morning.
The 34-year-old Eriksen reportedly clutched his chest before collapsing on the field in the 65th minute, prompting the match to be abandoned.
“I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well,” remarked team doctor Morten Boesen in a statement shared on social media by the federation. “He is with his family and is in good spirits.”
“We hope to discharge him soon so he can return home.
“We are ensuring the well-being of the players and staff and are in regular communication with them.”
This announcement was also shared on Eriksen’s Instagram story.
Boesen’s update followed a previous statement on Sunday, where he mentioned that “[Eriksen] was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly.”
Previously, Eriksen experienced cardiac arrest and required resuscitation on the field during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in June 2021.
Afterward, he was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and successfully resumed his playing career with Premier League team Brentford in February 2022, just eight months after his collapse against Finland.
On Sunday, Denmark’s coach Brian Riemer noted that Eriksen responded to his teammates after the incident during the friendly against Ukraine.
“Christian Eriksen waved to his teammates as he left the pitch,” Riemer stated to reporters.
“Moments before he fell ill, he had a tussle with Ruslan Malinovskyi, which led me to think that was the cause of his distress, but I was wrong. After that, neither I nor the players could continue the match.”
Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
