This week’s Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana matches, alongside Colombian domestic league games, have been postponed due to a significant earthquake that struck Colombia on Monday.
In a statement released on Monday, the División Mayor del Fútbol Colombiano (Dimayor) conveyed its heartfelt condolences and solidarity with all Colombians affected by the earthquake.
The 7.4 magnitude quake affected western Colombia, resulting in at least 111 fatalities and extensive damage to infrastructure. President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a national state of emergency in response.
Conmebol has postponed two Round of 16 matches: Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores game featuring Deportes Tolima against Independiente del Valle, and Wednesday’s Copa Sudamericana clash between Independiente Santa Fe and River Plate. The new dates for these games have yet to be determined.
In their statement, the South American soccer governing body emphasized that the decision was made to “ensure everyone’s safety” and to honor “the victims” of the earthquake.
Additionally, the domestic league has postponed the remaining fixtures of Matchday 4 as well as the entirety of Matchday 5 due to the ongoing situation.
Dimayor stated, “Our commitment is to Colombia and to all who are enduring these challenging times. In such circumstances, we believe football should serve the nation and support those in need the most.”
“The 36 professional clubs under Dimayor will dedicate their efforts this week to providing aid and recovery support for the affected communities, opening their facilities and resources to assist the nation during this emergency.”
