Frank Lampard was greeted with chants of “sign the contract” as approximately 50,000 Coventry City fans gathered at War Memorial Park to commemorate the club’s long-awaited return to the Premier League.
The Sky Blues celebrated their promotion to the top flight for the first time in 25 years with a spectacular open-top bus parade, followed by a festive gathering in the park that marked their Championship title victory.
Meanwhile, Ipswich Town, another promoted team, held a parade on Monday, celebrating their achievement following a decisive 3-0 victory over QPR that secured second place on the season’s final day.
Taking to the stage with his jubilant squad, Lampard expressed, “This means so much to us. These boys are amazing, you lot are amazing,” before the excited supporters urged him to “sign the contract” to extend his tenure beyond the current deal, which expires at the end of next season.
Likewise, Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was moved by the tremendous crowd that turned out to support their parade. He shared, “It’s incredible, it’s humbling. We are so grateful for every person who comes out. Seeing the smiles on their faces means everything.”
On a lighter note, he mentioned resuming “dad duties” immediately after the festivities, remarking, “We have a few days now this week to hopefully enjoy it.”
Retiring Ipswich defender Ashley Young told Sky Sports that the last two days involved “a lot of drinking and a lot of celebrating,” adding, “[It’s] just a perfect way to go out.”
