Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish is optimistic that the club’s Conference League victory will be crucial in finding a qualified successor for Oliver Glasner and in encouraging key players to stay at Selhurst Park.
The Eagles celebrated their first European trophy following a 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig on Wednesday, marking a glorious conclusion to Glasner’s tenure.
This monumental achievement also secures Palace a place in the upcoming Europa League season, enhancing their previous FA Cup success.
Parish now faces a crucial summer filled with the tasks of hiring a new head coach and keeping hold of the club’s top talents.
Among the leading contenders for the managerial role are Andoni Iraola, who is set to depart Bournemouth, former Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, and Coventry’s head coach Frank Lampard.
When asked about the significance of their Conference League success, Parish expressed to Sky Sports, “It simplifies our situation in some respects but complicates it in others.”
“It simplifies our situation in that I believe managers are more inclined to be interested in a club participating in European competitions. It offers them a platform to showcase their talents.”
“Of course, it means an increase in games—approximately 60—and we need to be ready, understanding the demands it entails.”
“We must ensure we have the right quality, adequate depth, a suitable manager, and then strive to see if we can achieve another victory.”
Jean-Philippe Mateta netted the decisive goal for Palace in the 51st minute at the Red Bull Arena.
Glasner, the Austrian manager, had announced back in January that he would step down when his contract concludes at the season’s end.
Commenting on how significant a Europa League berth is for attracting a manager and retaining players, Parish stated: “I genuinely believe it is.”
“While it’s not the sole factor—there are various challenges and other clubs also seeking managers, potentially in Europe—it certainly plays a role.”
“Today’s situation is significantly better than what it would have been had we lost the game, which might have left some players hesitant about renewing their contracts. So, it undeniably helps in many respects.”
While co-owner Parish recognizes the necessity to bolster the squad, he prefers to avoid a complete overhaul.
Paying tribute to Glasner, who succeeded Roy Hodgson in February 2024, Parish remarked, “Oliver has his vision, and we were fortunate to have him at our club during this period.”
“We must focus on the future, as must Oliver. He will always hold a special place in the hearts of all Crystal Palace supporters.”
“I hope we maintain our friendship. We work well together, and you can’t achieve success without strong collaboration. Let’s see if we can create a supportive environment for the incoming manager.”
