Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr needs time to come to terms with his collapsed transfer to Liverpool, head coach Pierre Sage has said.
The Senegal international, last season’s top scorer, was heavily linked with a late-window switch to Anfield but ultimately stayed at Selhurst Park.
Sage acknowledged that joining a club like Liverpool is a dream for many players. He said Sarr had a strong opportunity that didn’t materialize and that the best way to keep his prospects alive is to deliver another strong season for Palace, as he did last year. He added that time will help Sarr process the disappointment.
Sarr, 28, has yet to play this season because of a groin injury, missing Premier League defeats at Everton and at home to Manchester City. He will also be out for Saturday’s trip to Fulham (15:00 BST).
With Sarr’s future uncertain late in the window, Palace held talks with Belgium forward Malick Fofana on deadline day, but the 21-year-old opted to leave Lyon for Sunderland in a £30m move.
“We did everything we could,” Sage said of the negotiations. “In the end, the player had his own priorities. I wish him and his new club the best—he’s a good person and a good player.”
Fulham, Saturday’s opponents, are also seeking their first Premier League points after defeats to Chelsea at home and Sunderland away.
