Derry City Suffer Narrow…

Irish Premier Division

Shamrock Rovers 1 – 0 Derry City FT

Derry City faced a narrow 1-0 defeat against defending champions Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium.

The breakthrough came late in the match when Dylan Watts converted a penalty in the 81st minute during a game that was overall subdued.

Derry goalkeeper Eddie Beach made critical saves against Jack Byrne and Jake Mulraney, but ultimately succumbed to Watts’ penalty after Conor Barr fouled the dynamic Adam Brennan.

This defeat leaves Tiernan Lynch’s side in fifth place in the Premier Division after five matches.

Derry has been runners-up to Rovers three times since 2022 and hasn’t secured a league victory at this Dublin venue for over three years.

Earlier this year, the Candystripes managed to defeat last season’s double winners 1-0 in the President’s Cup at this venue, albeit against a significantly altered Rovers squad.

The first half saw minimal goal-scoring chances, with Beach making a key save to thwart Byrne following a clever play with Graham Burke.

At the other end, Patrick McClean had a close call, as Derry aimed for their second league win at Tallaght since 2017.

In his 445th match as head coach—setting a record for Rovers—Stephen Bradley executed a triple substitution midway through the second half.

Mulraney and Watts were brought on, and after Mulraney nearly sparked an opening for the team, Watts seized the opportunity from the penalty spot.

Brennan, who was a constant threat, pressured Barry Cotter and drew a foul from Barr in the box, prompting referee Kevin O’Sullivan to award the penalty.

Watts confidently struck his penalty low into the bottom left corner, sending Beach the wrong way and securing all three points for Rovers.

Despite a loss to Bohemians in their previous match, Rovers advance to third place, having played one game fewer than the teams ahead of them, while Derry drops to fifth.

The Candystripes will next face Shelbourne at home in one week’s time.
