Former Manchester United forward Diego Forlán has accepted the role of Uruguay’s interim head coach.
He takes over from Marcelo Bielsa, who resigned after Uruguay’s group-stage exit at the World Cup.
Forlán, 47, is expected to oversee the national team’s autumn friendlies before a permanent appointment is made later this year or in early 2027.
He will also manage Uruguay’s Under-20 side alongside the senior team.
Bielsa, appointed in May 2023, won 15 of 39 matches in charge. Following the disappointing World Cup exit, the 70-year-old Argentine said his tenure “left nothing behind.”
Forlán scored 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay and won the Golden Ball as the team reached the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
He retired from international football in March 2015 and ended his club career in 2018 after playing for 10 teams, most notably Villarreal and Atlético Madrid.
As a coach, he has had brief spells with Uruguayan clubs Peñarol and Atenas.
