Door OPEN for Liverpool to…

Liverpool has the opportunity to secure an ideal defender before the January transfer window closes.

With just a few days remaining until Monday’s deadline, Richard Hughes faces the pressure of finalizing a signing, though Arne Slot remains optimistic.

The Liverpool head coach addressed the possibility of a new signing during a press conference ahead of the matchup against Newcastle United.

Slot suggested that discussions are ongoing behind the scenes, indicating that Liverpool is still prepared to make a move and is engaged in “conversations” regarding potential players.

“Yes, you already know the answer. If we identify a player who can enhance our squad and we believe a deal is feasible, we will pursue it. These conversations happen outside this venue,” Slot stated.

This response is somewhat enigmatic. However, in previous instances, Slot has clearly dismissed potential deals. His current ambiguity may hint at the idea, as Fabrizio Romano has indicated, that Liverpool is actively exploring options.

Romano reported that Liverpool is specifically focused on right-backs:

“Today, Liverpool had internal discussions to assess the right-back market,” Romano explained. “They are looking into several possibilities but feel there are limited high-quality options. If they discover a strong candidate, they will act. Otherwise, they will continue with the current squad.”

So, who might fit this description of ‘quality’?

In our view, Liverpool has a promising opportunity to sign a player they have scouted extensively, one who would be an exemplary addition at Anfield due to his versatility as both a centre-back and a right-back.

That player is Ousmane Diao, a 21-year-old defender who, according to sources from Anfield Watch, has been closely monitored by the club.

Diao currently plays for FC Midtjylland in Denmark and already boasts over 100 appearances. His performance in this season’s Europa League has particularly stood out.

In recent matches, Diao has excelled, winning 11 of his last 12 aerial duels and seven of his last nine ground duels. He also scored goals against Nottingham Forest and Sturm Graz prior to this.

Diao is currently at a pivotal point in his career, ready for the next challenge, making him an excellent option for Liverpool. Midtjylland is known for their willingness to sell players, and they already have several young centre-backs prepared to step in for Diao.

This makes the opportunity for Liverpool to sign the Senegalese defender quite inviting. His ability to play as a right-sided centre-back as well as a right-back aligns perfectly with Liverpool’s needs for depth in both positions.

While he may not be required to start every match, Diao is undoubtedly ready to contribute to the squad with the ‘quality’ Liverpool seeks. Additionally, given his age, he has the potential to evolve into a regular starter. His speed as a centre-back would make him well-suited for the demands of Premier League football.
