Leah Williamson, the captain of the England women’s football team, has officially extended her contract with Women’s Super League team Arsenal.
The 29-year-old defender has reportedly signed a two-year agreement with the club, according to BBC Sport.
Having joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of nine, Williamson has dedicated her entire senior career to the club, amassing over 250 appearances since her debut in 2014.
In a statement, the club expressed, “Everyone at Arsenal anticipates Leah’s ongoing leadership and stellar performance.”
Throughout her time with Arsenal, Williamson has contributed to the team’s successes, including winning the WSL, two FA Cups, and four League Cups. She was part of the squad that secured the Champions League title for the 2024-25 season, where she earned a spot on the team of the season, as well as winning the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup in 2026.
Since making her international debut in 2018, she has earned 67 caps for England and led the Lionesses to victory in the Women’s Euros in both 2022 and 2025.
Unfortunately, a knee injury sustained during the 2025 Euros, along with other leg injuries, has limited her to just four league appearances this season.
Williamson is the latest player to commit to Arsenal, joining Kim Little, Stina Blackstenius, and Steph Catley in signing new contracts recently.
Analysis: Club’s Strategic Planning Is Benefiting
Concerns among fans regarding Williamson’s contract have been addressed, as the club remained confident in reaching an agreement.
Williamson has been a pivotal figure for Arsenal and is a staple in the lineup when healthy.
While injuries following the 2025 Euros have disrupted her season, her presence continues to be vital as a team leader.
Her exceptional vision, defensive capabilities, and ability to control the game’s tempo affirm her status as one of the world’s premier centre-backs.
Despite her absence, Arsenal has showcased a strong squad, with her teammate Lotte Wubben-Moy excelling in her stead.
Knowing that Williamson will remain with Arsenal next season is a major boost for Renee Slegers’ team, which aspires to build a squad capable of long-term dominance.
In pursuit of consecutive European titles, the Gunners have also secured contracts for Blackstenius and Catley and are eyeing to recruit Spain’s Ona Batlle and England midfielder Georgia Stanway, among other potential signings this summer.
The club’s proactive strategy is proving fruitful as they prepare for the upcoming season.
