EUROPA LEAGUE PLAYER RATINGS

After Freiburg’s impressive win against Genk on Thursday evening, the spotlight shifted to Stuttgart, who headed to Porto looking to reverse a one-goal deficit and secure a spot in the quarter-finals of this season’s Europa League alongside their fellow Baden-Württembergers.

Before the match, Sebastian Hoeneß highlighted the significance of the event: “The opportunity to advance to the last eight is motivation enough. This match won’t feel like a regular game; the excitement is already building.”

An unexpected development occurred an hour before kickoff when VfB revealed their lineup, with Jamie Leweling absent. Finn Jeltsch also found himself on the bench, making way for a defensive return of Jeff Chabot and Maximilian Mittelstädt.

Stuttgart started strong, keeping their opponents pinned back and forcing Diogo Costa into a remarkable save just eight minutes in. Angelo Stiller’s free kick from the edge of the area struck the wall, but the rebound fell to Chris Führich, whose powerful shot was deflected, yet Costa managed to leap high and deny Stuttgart a dream opening goal.

Just moments later, Führich raced down the left flank and found an unmarked Deniz Undav in the box, but astonishingly, the in-form striker missed the target.

Around the 20-minute mark, Stuttgart faced a crushing blow against the run of play when Borja Sainz broke down Porto’s left and after evading defenders, set up William Gomes, who scored at the far post.

Stuttgart responded positively, continually testing Porto’s captain Costa, who made excellent saves to deny both Führich and Bilal El Khannouss.

By halftime, Stuttgart’s dominance was evident, yet they found themselves trailing by two goals on aggregate.

Diogo Costa continued to thwart Stuttgart at the start of the second half, making an extraordinary stop to deny Undav once more.

Despite controlling possession, Stuttgart struggled to convert their chances, and at the 70-minute mark, they paid the price when Porto substitute Victor Froholdt netted a stunning strike from outside the box, effectively ending Stuttgart’s hopes in the Europa League.

With the aggregate score now 4-1 in favor of Porto, the tie was essentially decided, but Nikolas Nartey made it worse for Stuttgart, receiving two yellow cards within 60 seconds with 13 minutes remaining.

Porto comfortably saw out the remainder of the match. Despite Stuttgart’s dominant performance throughout, a lack of finishing prowess from their normally reliable forwards and some defensive lapses proved costly for Sebastian Hoeneß’s side.
